Upstairs is open plan and full of light. The floor to ceiling windows bring the outside in providing an incredible space with vaulted ceilings and stunning views. Because of this light and to make the most of the incredible views, the upstairs houses the modern kitchen, dining and living space. It’s a fantastic place to entertain, relax and enjoy the house. The kitchen is fitted with everything you need for a comfortable holiday with ample space for dining and entertaining. Large comfy sofas and bean bags are in the living room along with a wood burning stove for chilly evenings and double doors leading out onto the decking area, terrace and garden.

Upon entering the house on the ground floor there are two principal bedroom suites, one with en-suite shower room and underfloor heating and the second with a super en-suite bathroom with bath tub and shower. Next are two more bedrooms, both with bunk beds and a single bed in each. Additionally there is a family bathroom with bath tub, shower, basin and toilet.

Above the living area is a mezzanine level, accessed by it’s own stairs and through a door, accommodating the fifth bedroom with two single beds. Although the ceiling height is low, it’s a cosy, private room perfect for older children

Lastly, there is a useful and practical utility room with a toilet and back door opening onto the outdoor hot shower.

A Charlesworth

Lower Hillcott welcomed a group of 10 and we had the holiday of a lifetime. The house was clean and spacious for our group – the views from the living room are spectacular!

The village of Crackington Haven avoids the tourism mayhem is Cornwall and the locals are very welcoming. In the village, you will find a a pub and two cafes that both serve local food. The entire village is also brilliant for watching the sunset (you can watch this at the top of the cliff, in the bay or even in the home!).

I will certainly be recommending Lower Hillcott to those looking for a quiet getaway in the UK and I very much hope to return myself.

The Area

What we love about the area...

Crackington Haven is located on the north coast in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It was once a small harbour importing coal and limestone and it has managed to escape any development and is now a small unspoiled, secret, cove.

When the conditions are right it is a great surfing spot and during the summer holiday weeks two life guards are on duty from 10am to 6pm each day. In the spring the cliffs are covered in heather and it is a wonderful place to see the wild flowers and hear the birdsong.

The gently sloping beach is perfect for exploring, or for relaxing, and, although pebbly when the tide is in, there is plenty of sand for building castles when the tide is out. Crackington Haven really is a special place perfect for a family holiday away from the crowds.

For convenience there is a cafe in the village across the road from the beach serving lovely local food – including home made pasties, cream teas and cakes, and the ever popular ice creams. As well, in the summer, it sells beach essentials, wet suits, body boards – and also rents wet suits. The family pub, The Coombe Barton Inn, serves delicious food and has a wonderful terrace to watch the sun going down over the bay.

The cottage has books and leaflets with plenty of suggestions for days out locally and what to do in the immediate area, including local beaches and walks. A highlight is the wooded valley walk inland from the back of the house returning by the cliff path, enjoying breathtaking scenery and wildlife. Or, take a walk up Penkenna, Cornwall’s highest cliff at 735 feet.
