The Area

What we love about the area...

Kilkhampton is a small picturesque town just a few minutes away where there are local shops and a friendly pub serving food. The bustling holiday town of Bude is a four mile drive to the south and the border with North Devon just six miles north. The area is a quieter stretch of the South West Coast boasting beautiful cliff-backed surf beaches and idyllic wooded valleys. The epic walking and trail running of the South West Coast path is picked up just two miles west at the bottom of the beautiful Coombe Valley but if you’re up for less exertion, great pubs with lovely home-cooked food are also within easy reach. Theme parks, aqua parks (including the North Devon wake park) and inland lakes for sailing and windsurfing are a short drive away. If bikes are your thing there are great road cycling routes as well as various bike-hire facilities based around some excellent purpose-built cycling trails. The area’s surfing is renowned and there are a plethora of quality breaks catering to all abilities. If you don’t have your own board there are a variety of surfboards and bodyboards available to borrow.

Right next to the property (about a 2 min walk) is Penstowe Leisure Centre. It has a pool, cafe and sports hall.

Just 10 minutes away is the Tamar Lakes Activity Centre. There are two lakes offering a variety of activities including watersports, angling, walking and plenty of relaxing. Tamar lakes open Easter – October.

The Tamar Lake Café overlooking the lake offers a variety of light lunches, cakes and beverages. A visit to the new play area is a must for your little adventurers. There is also a popular round lake walk and cycle trail, which is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, takes about one hour. Tamar Lakes are popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, families, sailors, bird watchers and anglers, all searching for their own piece of tranquillity.
The three mile circular path around the upper lake is also suitable for bikes, pushchairs and wheelchairs. Don’t forget the camera – the countryside is humming with wildlife; why not see what you can spot from one of the bird hides? SW Lakes Trust, It’s your outdoors – come and explore!

The nearest beaches are Duckpool and Sandymouth Bay – just a few minutes away. Duckpool sits at the mouth of the Coombe Valley, in an area steeped in history and surrounded by coastal grasslands and ancient woodlands.

A river flows down the valley and emerges at the top of the beach, giving Duckpool its name. There are great opportunities to enjoy a walk here, both along the South West Coast Path for exhilarating sea views as well as inland. A circular walk along the valley takes in Stowe Barton farmstead, and woodland trails in Stowe Wood can be explored too.

There is much history and wildlife to discover here. Anti-tank blocks installed before WW2 can be found scattered along the beach. King William’s Bridge built by Parson Hawker in 1836 crosses the river at the top of the access road. Nearby sheltered woodlands are dripping in lichens and the maritime grasslands are strewn with flowers such as thrift and squill. Rock pools offer an array of sea life.

Sandymouth Café
Views overlooking the beach and serving breakfast, hot and cold lunches, cream teas and ice cream.
